MY STORY

After growing up in Atlanta GA, I received a tennis scholarship from Temple University, earned a business degree and immediately started running the ‘rat race’ because that’s what society says we should do, right? That’s where happiness lies, right? Sitting in a corner office on the 19th floor of some swanky corporate office busting my ass day after 12 hour day to make as much money as possible. This is where happiness lies, right?

Nope. Not for me.

For me, it was chipping away at my soul. I was miserable and having to convince myself to get out of bed every day. Before long, that drink or two after work to calm the angst inside me turned into prescription drug abuse or anything or anyone else that could take away the ever increasing depression. I wasn’t sleeping well, was eating crap food, wasn’t moving my body, was engaging in unhealthy relationships. Full of anxiety.

Then I was fired from my job. Rock bottom.

It’s often in the darkest hour transformation begins and it certainly did for me. I was suffering and knew I needed to find a better way to live. I had always been interested in what makes a human being naturally feel good and content with life. This led me on a journey of self-discovery where I began to research and bring healthy choices into my life. My interest in what makes us truly “well” led me to study how lifestyle choices including sleep, nutrition, exercise, relationships, stress management, spirituality, work, and life’s purpose have a profound impact on how we feel. Like spokes on a bike wheel, they all support the structure of that bike. By gradually incorporating these habits into my life, I was able to improve both my physical and mental well-being and leave addiciton behind.

Fast-forward to 2017 and I left my corporate gig in Buckhead, hiked the Pacific Crest Trail and enrolled in nursing school and learned about the brain and addiction and how we can heal it through our lifestyle choices. After earning my RN license in 2020 and becoming certified in addiction, I worked for major medical centers, psychiatric facilities, detox and substance abuse treatment centers-all of which taught me a great deal. But I was missing that 1 on 1 connection where I could really help someone change their life and sustain it. So I decided to roll the dice and open up my own practice called Brian The Recovery Guy where I now help others get into recovery and thrive once there.

Today I am proud to say that I usually show up when I say I will, do what I say I will do and am present for the people in my life. As it does for all of us, life still kicks me in the face, however I now live a lifestyle that allows me to manage those moments and quickly get back to a good place.

IN MY FREE TIME

You will probably find me on a trail somewhere hiking and spending time in nature. Or hanging with loved ones. Or listening to progressive house music. Or reading some kind of self-improvement book. Or traveling. Or watching the Braves. Or just taking a beloved power nap.
